A total of 50 cultivars have so far been developed by the Spices Research Centre on 24 spice crops (onion 7, bunching onion 1, chilli 4, ornamental chilli 2, garlic 4, ginger 3, turmeric 5, coriander 2, eryngium 1, black cumin 1, fenugreek 3, firingi 1, fennel 2, dill 1, celery 1, ajwan 1, aerometric ginger 1, chive 1, mint 2, plum 1, cinnamon 1, bay leaf 1, black pepper 1 and betel leaf 3) were developed, which are currently cultivated at the farmer’s level. Moreover, 66 more advanced technologies including production technology, soil and water management, insect and disease pest management, post-harvest technology have been invented to increase production. Apart from this, more research activities are going on to verify the impact of the research at the socio-economic, marketing and value chain, farmer level. In 1995-96, the production of spices in 1.36 lakh hectares of land in this country was 3.00 lakh tones, but currently the production of spices in 4.29 lakh hectares is 35.93 lakh tones. In comparison the total production of spice crops has now increased by about 11.98 times.
